India Clean Energy Investment Slowing Coal?

The Chinese-based company Sany Group is the latest to join the push for renewable energy investment in India, as it directs US$3 billion toward development of at least 2 gigawatts of energy capacity. But Justin Guay, climate program officer at the David and Lucile Packard Foundation wonders whether India’s push for renewables is, in fact, slowing coal. He argues that microgrids do not displace coal use because villages targeted were never hooked onto the central grid to begin with. “It’s a stopgap solution for the energy poor. I’d agree 100% this is primarily a development solution not a climate solution.”
