Public lands in the U.S. are considered America’s best defense against rising greenhouse gas emissions because the forests pull vast quantities of carbon from the atmosphere, reports Grist. According to a report conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey, because of climate change the amount of federal public lands may increase in the lower 48 states to help store nearly 20% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
