Ancient Coal Samples Link Fires to Climate Change

John Calder, a University of Wyoming geophysics graduate student, concluded that increased temperatures strongly correlate to increases in forest fire frequency and intensity. The charcoal records were gathered from forest fires that occurred during the period called the Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA), in which global temperatures were comparable to the present day. Accord to the report, 10 out of 12 sites burned per century compared with 6 before the MCA and 4 per century after.
