New Climate Policy In India

India, the world’s third-largest carbon emitter, is reportedly shifting its view on global climate negotiations. An internal document from Chief Economic Advisor Arvind Subramanian addressed to India’s Prime Minister suggests India should abandon its old position on climate change. The document says India should focus on actively reducing its emissions, and according to Subramanian, it would help India position itself as a global leader. Further, the document urges the Prime Minister to push G7 countries into adopting a carbon tax. Subramanian says, “India has a greater stake in climate change mitigation than most rich countries, which will likely be less affected and better able to cope with consequences.”
