Deeper Fjords in Greenland Can Lead to Faster Sea Level Rise

Greenland’s fjords are much deeper than previously estimated, which could have give rising sea level rates an unexpected boost, says Eric Rignot, lead researcher and glaciologist for the University of California. Estimates on the speed at which sea levels are rising “will have to change because these processes are not accounted for in existing models,” says Rignot. The Washington Post reports that because those outlet glaciers are more exposed to warm water, they could potentially contribute an added 20 feet to current sea level rise projections.
