Annual Oil Industry Report Showcases U.S. Renewables, Efficiency

Associations representing the U.S. energy efficiency, solar, wind, biomass, hydropower, geothermal, coal, and nuclear industries are in an unusual position in the American Petroleum Institute’s latest State of American Energy report: they’ve each been offered their own chapter to report on technologies that compete with oil and gas.

“In a document written by the primary lobby group for the largest oil and gas producers on earth, including Shell Oil Company, BP America, and ExxonMobil, this is fairly remarkable,” Greentech reports. “But the experience, it turns out, was a positive one.”

The Solar Energy Industry Association said the Institute allowed it to “write its own section with no edits, other than for style,” Pyper writes. So the solar section begins with the observation that “few things threaten America’s future prosperity more than climate change. But there is growing hope. Every 2.5 minutes of every single day, the U.S. solar industry is helping to fight this battle by flipping the switch on another completed solar project.”
