Ontario to Host Climate Summit of the Americas in July

The Ontario government will host a Climate Summit of the Americas in Toronto in July, “continuing its efforts to go where the federal government won’t,” the Ottawa Citizen reported Tuesday.

“The intention, besides keeping climate change in the public eye, is to have sub-national governments work together” to set GHG reduction targets and devise carbon pricing mechanisms to meet them, Environment and Climate Minister Glen Murray told Lima climate delegates meeting in Lima, Peru.

The following day, Murray convened a side event at the UN climate conference to make the economic case for sub-national climate leadership.

“Sub-national governments around the world are moving forward to develop a new generation of policies to deploy clean energy technologies, increase energy efficiency, unlock private investment, and build greater climate resilience,” the event program stated. “Collectively, these governments are demonstrating that there are economically viable initiatives that lead to emissions reductions now.”
