Cities Target 454 MT in Annual Emission Reductions by 2020

Mayors of more than 2,000 cities, including more than 200 with specific greenhouse gas targets and strategies, committed to 454 megatons in annual emission reductions by 2020 during the UN Climate Summit September 23. The UN announced the Compact of Mayors, a new City Climate Finance Leadership Alliance, and a City Creditworthiness Partnership, pointing to the potential for eight gigatons (eight billion tons) per year in municipal emission reductions by 2050. “From Rio to Seoul, mayors are already making great progress in fighting climate change and preparing their cities for its devastating impacts,” said Rio de Janeiro Mayor and C40 Cities Coalition Chair Eduardo Paes.
