Burlington, Vermont Generates 100% of Electricity from Renewables

With a population of 42,000, Burlington, Vermont may be the largest U.S. city so far to generate 100% of its electricity from renewable sources. “With little fanfare, the Burlington Electric Department crossed the threshold this month with the purchase of the 7.4-megawatt Winooski 1 hydroelectric project on the Winooski River at the city’s edge,” Ring reports. “When it did, Burlington joined the Washington Electric Co-operative, which has about 11,000 customers across central and northern Vermont, which reached 100% earlier this year.” Vermont’s statewide goal is to produce 90% of all its electricity, heat, and transportation energy from renewables by 2050.
