The Best Thing to Happen for the Environment: Canadian PM Stephen Harper

The executive director of Canada’s Broadbent Institute says Prime Minister Stephen Harper is the best thing that could have happened for the environment. And, no, Rick Smith did not publish his Toronto Star op ed on April Fool’s Day. “Stephen Harper is to environmental protection what Freddy Krueger is to unsuspecting teenagers in A Nightmare on Elm Street,” Smith writes. “But here’s the thing: Canada’s environmental laws were inadequate to begin with. In a 2005 study, a year before the Conservatives took office, Canada ranked 28th out of 30 industrialized countries for environmental performance.” Now that the country’s environmental policies have been “thoroughly burned to the ground,” Smith sees a unique opportunity to rebuild from the ground up.
