‘Shocking News’ About British Columbia’s Carbon Tax: It Works!

Contrary to Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s consistent claims that a carbon tax would “destroy jobs and growth,” B.C.’s policy has boosted the provincial economy while cutting taxes and carbon pollution, Sustainable Prosperity reports in this Globe and Mail item. The revenue-neutral tax now stands at $30 per tonne of carbon dioxide, or about seven cents per litre of gasoline. The results: the lowest personal income tax rate in Canada, one of the lowest corporate rates in North America, and a 16% drop in fuel use, over a six-year period when consumption rose 3% in the rest of Canada.
