Alberta Could Cut Fossil-Fueled Electricity in the Next 20 Years

Alberta can reduce its over-reliance on fossil-fueled electricity over the next 20 years by boosting wind, solar, biomass, hydro, and geothermal energy, according to a new modelling study by the Pembina Institute and Clean Energy Canada. “Alberta’s electricity sector generates almost the same quantity of carbon pollution as its oilsands sector. This is due, in large part, to the province’s continued reliance on coal,” Glave and Thibault write in a joint release. Recent polls show that 68 to 80% of Albertans favour renewable generation, and two-thirds would pay more for electricity from solar or wind.
