India’s New PM Commits to Solar Electricity in Every Home by 2019

In a country where 400 million people have no access to electricity, incoming Prime Minister Narendra Modi is counting on solar to deliver on his promise that every home will have at least two light bulbs, a solar cooker, and a television by 2019. “We look upon solar as having the potential to completely transform the way we look at the energy space,” said Narendra Taneja, convener of the energy division at Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party. Bloomberg reports that Modi introduced the country’s first incentives for large-scale solar in 2009, when he was chief minister of Gujarat state. (h/t to Clean Energy Review [1])
