B.C. Understates Methane Emissions from Natural Gas
The B.C. government estimates its fugitive emissions in the natural gas industry by using a combination of “bottom-up” inventory and detailed field reporting measurements. What is lacking in B.C.’s estimates are “top-down” measurement approaches used in the U.S. which measure the methane concentration in the atmosphere around gas industry operations. A survey conducted in 2014 by Stanford in the journal Science shows that top-down methods almost always reveal more emissions than bottom-up methods.
